How to Choose Golf Head Covers: Types, Materials & Fit

Head covers are the easiest way to protect your clubs and add a bit of personality to your bag. But with woods covers, iron sets, plush characters and leather designs all on the shelf, which ones actually make sense for your setup? Here's a quick, practical guide.

Why head covers matter

Every time clubs knock together in your bag — walking the course, riding a buggy, or in the car boot — the finish takes a hit. Head covers stop that: they cushion the crowns of your woods, keep iron faces from scratching, and protect the delicate insert on your putter. A good set keeps your clubs looking like new for years.

The main types

  • Wood covers (driver, fairway & hybrid). The most common set. Look for a driver cover that fits a 460cc head — most modern drivers are that size — and clear number or club tags so you grab the right one at speed.
  • Iron covers. Sold in sets (usually 9–12 pieces) with numbers so each iron has its place. Great if you carry your clubs a lot or want to prevent chips on the faces.
  • Putter covers. Blade and mallet putters need different shapes, so check the style matches your head. A snug fit with a secure closure matters most here.

Materials, and what they're good at

  • PU leather. Smart, hard-wearing and easy to wipe clean — the all-rounder, and what most of our designs use.
  • Plush and animal covers. Soft, fun and a favourite for gifts. They add character to a bag without costing much.
  • Knit. The classic, retro look — breathable and lightweight.

How to choose the right set

Three quick checks: fit (driver size, blade vs mallet putter), number of pieces (match your bag — a full set of irons, or just the woods), and closure (velcro or a snug elastic collar keeps covers on when the bag tips). Buying as a present? Our Personal Gifts range is an easy win — a fun character cover lands every time.
