5 Golf Training Aids That Actually Lower Your Scores

You don't need a coach on speed-dial to get better — a few well-chosen training aids, used little and often, do a lot of the work. Here are five that target the parts of the game where scores are actually won and lost.

1. A putting alignment mat

Most shots in a round are putts, so this is the highest-value aid you can own. An alignment mat with an arc path trains your start line and stroke shape at home, on any flat floor — five minutes a day builds a repeatable stroke.

2. A swing trainer for tempo

A weighted or telescopic tempo stick grooves rhythm and doubles as a warm-up before you tee off — one of the simplest ways to stop rushing the downswing.

3. A grip trainer

Almost every swing fault traces back to the hands. A moulded grip trainer clips to the club and puts your hands in the same correct position every time, until it becomes second nature.

4. Impact tape

You can't fix a strike you can't see. Impact labels show exactly where the ball meets the face — toe, heel or centre — so your range sessions have real feedback instead of guesswork.

5. A chipping net

The short game is the fastest way to save shots. A pop-up chipping net turns the garden into a target and makes practising up-and-downs genuinely fun.
